About The Canine Ledger

Why this exists

[OPEN WITH YOUR STORY — 150–250 words. This is the single most important paragraph on the site, and it is the one thing here I cannot draft for you. Some structure that works: the dog’s name and who they were. The period when you knew something was changing. The specific night or morning you went looking for information and what you found instead — the sponsored listicle, the forum thread from 2011, the clinic brochure that told you nothing. What you needed and couldn’t find. Write it once, plainly, without reaching for the sentimental register. The restraint is what makes it land.]

That is the whole reason this site exists. Not because the internet needs more dog content (it doesn’t), but because the specific thing I needed at that moment did not exist in a form I could trust.

What this site is

The Canine Ledger is an independent, evidence-led resource for dog owners. It is written by one person, and it sources its claims. Each page is a summary of the published research as I understand it. No vet reviews it, so always confirm with your own vet.

It starts with end-of-life and pet loss, because that is where I found the gap and where I have something to say that I have actually lived. Over time it will cover the other decisions dog owners have to make with poor information: homemade feeding, what’s actually in the food, whether the supplements do anything.

How this site is different

Every page is a summary, not a vet’s opinion. It sets out what the studies, guidelines and laws say, as I understand them. Where I add my own judgement, the page says so. The end advice is always the same: confirm with your vet.

Every factual claim links to its source. Where possible, to the primary research rather than to somebody else’s summary of it. If you want to check my work, you can.

Where the evidence is unclear, this site says so. A great deal of pet health advice is stated with a confidence the underlying research does not support. When the honest answer is “we don’t know” or “the studies disagree,” that is what you’ll read here.

Commissions never change a verdict. Some pages contain affiliate links, and they are disclosed. If the evidence says a product doesn’t work, that is what this site publishes, whether or not there is a commission attached to saying otherwise.

Grief content carries no advertising. No display ads, no pop-ups, no upsells on any page about losing a dog. That is a permanent commitment, not a launch phase.

What this site is not

It is not a substitute for your veterinarian. Nothing here can examine your dog. Every decision about your dog’s health, comfort, or death belongs to you and a professional who can see them.

It is also not neutral about everything. On questions where the evidence supports a position, this site takes it. Balance is not the same as accuracy, and pretending every claim has an equally weighted counter-claim is its own kind of dishonesty.
